Project

Chronica Mobilis is a project that integrates research and artistic creation. Therefore, besides the presentation of an interactive performance with gameplay, an artist residency and a two-day activities including discussion, practice and deconstruction of the work are program as well. All this to facilitate the exchange of knowledge on the subject between artists and researchers from Brazil and Spain.

The project was conceived by the researcher Vanessa Santos together with artist Vj Pixel.

Vanessa Santos holds a PhD study entitled “La movilidad y los cambios narrativos en la era de la ubicuidad”. at the Pompeu Fabra University, under direction of Roc Parés i Burguès and co-tutoring of Karla Brunet. She is interested in the creative use of locative technology and its encouragement in the creation of new narrative genres. The performance serves as an object for the analysis of audience interactive experience in response to different participation strategies.

Vj Pixel has long performance in the field of interactive media art. He has been working with the topic of interactive narrative with gameplay. Previously, he developed the project of geolocated narrative, called Narrative Navigation with the Dutch artist Sander Veenhof.

Various artists and researchers joined the project over time, after a public announcement aimed at those interested in contributing to the process. The performance was then being collaboratively created and influenced by the knowledge and ideas brought by everyone who became part of the team.

The project development has been essentially done remotely, because in the end we gathered in the group professionals from around the world. The collaborative process for designing the performance also happens in person, during a six-week artist residency at Hangar, Barcelona, from 6 October to 18 November 2014. The residence has an intensive and interdisciplinary program and covers technical activities and artistic creation. During the residency, artists and researchers will be working primarily on the development of the softwares that support the performance.

Major institutional collaborations to the project also come from the artistic production center Hangar, in the framework of cooperation with the Master in Digital Arts, Pompeu Fabra University. Hangar has supported and encouraged the process from the beginning. The artist residency planned by the project was also made possible with the help of the Artistic and Cultural Mobility Program of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Bahia – Brazil.

The performance will be the first presented in Barcelona on October 25, 2014, in Hangar. Em 2015, it will be presented in Brazil, in the cities of Salvador and São Paulo. Activities to share knowledge about new locative narrative formats using mobile technology always occur prior to the performances.
